About this:...Nice article on an intriguing subject. About this: "By the nineteen forties the premier practitioner of the soprano was the inimitable multi-reedist Lucky Thompson." To be accurate, Lucky Thompson didn't start playing soprano until the late 1950s. His first recordings on the instrument were in 1959 about a year before those of Trane.

Another fine soprano player was Herb Geller who didn't start playing the instrument until well after he had moved to Germany.Noal Cohenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03843270148690800992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286745340613267785.post-17316461737837022372017-02-20T11:31:15.507-08:002017-02-20T11:31:15.507-08:00Oliver Nelson's work on soprano has been cited...Oliver Nelson's work on soprano has been cited by several people.
I will definitely check this out. If you listen to Lucky play "In a Sentimental Way" it's hard not to see his influence on Coltrane's version of the same song. As for Lacy he was the first to concentrate solely on the soprano and so widened the possibilities. Miles may have been influenced by hearing Lacy on this horn to buy Coltrane his first soprano. Miles always liked to absorb what was happening around him.
As for Dex I never considered his soprano work that extensive but I will have to revisit his work on that horn.
Ralph
Ralph A. A couple of comments from...Thanks for the article.

A couple of comments from a player. The soprano saxophone is NOT difficult to play. Steve Lacy, though a fine player (e.g. on the "Gil Evans Plus Ten" album) was not an influence on anyone that I have heard of. The big influence, since 1960, has been Trane. (Sidney was a superb player, but not an influence on anyone in the modern era.)

Another fine soprano saxophone player was Dex, who can be heard playing it on the albums from the "Round Midnight" movie. Gerry Mulligan also played it later in his life.

It is interesting that Lucky Thompson and Dex didn't sound like Trane, but rather like themselves an octave higher. The same can be said of Gerry Mulligan, an octave and a half higher.

The top note on most sopranos for a long time is a concert E, because they have an F# key. I had a Selmer Mark VI soprano, from 1972, and that had an F# key, which was needed if you wanted that note, because the way to get an F# on a horn without that key uses the "arpeggio top F" key, which was not present on the Mark VI soprano. The later Selmer sopranos all have an F# key, and also that arpeggio top F key.Tommy Blackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12630858796936139386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5286745340613267785.post-23669196316752596202017-02-20T08:18:30.376-08:002017-02-20T08:18:30.376-08:00excellent article!
